Sponsors & Supporters

The O‘ahu Writers Retreat exists because of a community that believes in creating space for writers. In addition to our faculty, staff, and participants, we are supported by many who contribute goods, services, discounts, collaboration, and advocacy. Their generosity helps us keep the retreat accessible, rooted in local culture, and focused on what matters most: craft, creativity, and community.

We are grateful for the following sponsors and supporters.

North Shore News

Established in 1970, this little newspaper is the only publication dedicated to covering the entire district, including the communities of Waialua, Hale‘iwa, Kahuku, and Lāʻie. It is available at North Shore businesses as well as public libraries in Waialua, Kahuku, and Wahiawā. And, don’t forget: “Dis Buggah Free!” NSNHaleiwa@gmail.com.

North Shore Soaps

Located at the historic Waialua Sugar Mill on the North Shore of Oʻahu, this artisanal operation makes products by hand with aloha and uses 100 percent natural ingredients. The company provides the soaps that we gift to participants, a small but thoughtful reminder of the care that abounds in the district of Waialua.

Owen's Retreat

The Mokulē'ia Beach Houses at Owen's Retreat is kama'āina owned and has operated as a legal vacation rental since the 1950's by the same 'ohana (extended family). “It was the vision of our kupuna (grandparents) to share this beautiful coastline with guests from all over the world," says its current manager. Owen's Retreat helps make it possible for more writers to attend the retreat.

Our Supporters

Our supporters are collaborators and community partners who sustain the retreat through shared commitment, outreach, and long-standing care for writers and writing, and also for readers and reading.

Bamboo Ridge Press

Founded in 1978, Bamboo Ridge Press is Hawai‘i's longest-running independent literary small press, dedicated to publishing literature by, for, and about Hawai‘i's people. The press has given us books, opportunities for publication, and island writers who enliven our program with for public readings.

Selkirk Mountain Writing Retreat

This special gathering happens October 5-11, 2026, at the Talus Rock Retreat, in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains of Sandpoint, Idaho. With a specific focus on providing tools for writers from marginalized communities, all creative folks are welcome—"dreamers of sentences, hopers of ideas, the subtle storytellers and the powerful prose slingers." https://www.selkirkmountainretreat.com/.

Waialua Library

Built by Isamu Abe Construction in 1928, the library is the smallest public library on O‘ahu. In 1997, the Public Library Association (division of American Library Association) honored it as the “Best Small/Rural Library in America.” The library, its librarians, and its patrons are valued community partners and collaborators in supporting literary life on the North Shore.
